Requirements / The Challenge:

When it comes to attic spaces, many homeowners face the unique challenge of optimizing every inch of available space, especially when working with angled ceilings. In this particular project located in Dooradoyle, Co. Limerick, the client approached WalkInWardrobes.ie with a very specific request: to create a bespoke hinged wardrobe that would not only serve as an elegant and functional storage solution but also take full advantage of the unique dimensions of the attic room.

The primary challenges of the project were:

  1. Angled ceiling: The most obvious difficulty was the sloping ceiling, which would require custom design solutions to maximize storage without sacrificing aesthetics.
  2. Maximizing space: The wardrobe needed to offer ample storage capacity, but the available space was limited, both in terms of floor area and height. This required a creative design approach that would blend seamlessly with the room’s existing layout while making use of every possible inch.
  3. Custom doors: Given the unique angles of the ceiling, the wardrobe doors had to be specially designed and custom-built to fit perfectly into the space, creating a seamless and functional design.
  4. Color coordination: The client wanted the wardrobe to fit harmoniously with the room’s existing decor. This meant careful attention to the color scheme, ensuring that the wardrobe’s finish would complement the rest of the attic’s interior.

These specific needs required a bespoke solution that would combine practicality with a high-end finish, transforming a challenging attic space into a beautifully organized and functional storage area.

Our Solution / Project Description:

At WalkInWardrobes.ie, we specialize in creating bespoke solutions that turn spaces with unique challenges into functional and stylish areas. In this project, we set to work designing a wardrobe that would not only maximize space but also bring a high level of craftsmanship and elegance to the room.

Custom Hinged Doors for an Angled Ceiling

The most significant design challenge in this attic wardrobe project was the angled ceiling. We understood that the wardrobe needed to fit perfectly within the confines of this space, without cutting off usable room or looking out of place. To achieve this, we created custom door templates using 6mm plywood, carefully measuring the angles and dimensions to ensure that the doors would seamlessly fit into the space.

To ensure the wardrobe doors were not only functional but also aesthetic, we chose hinged doors instead of sliding doors. While sliding doors are great for saving space, hinged doors were ideal for this project because they allowed for full accessibility and provided a more classic look. The hinge mechanism was carefully chosen to accommodate the angles of the ceiling, ensuring the doors could open freely without obstruction.

By creating precise templates for the doors and installing them with meticulous attention to detail, we ensured that the wardrobe doors aligned perfectly with the ceiling angles, making the space look naturally integrated and designed specifically for the room.

Color Customization

An important aspect of the design was ensuring that the wardrobe’s color scheme complemented the existing room decor. The client had specific color preferences for the wardrobe, so we worked closely with them to select a custom color that would blend well with the rest of the attic’s aesthetic.

We used a high-quality spray finish for the doors, carefully applying the selected color to ensure a smooth, even coat that provided a polished, professional finish. The custom color made the wardrobe stand out in the room without overpowering the existing decor. The result was a wardrobe that was both functional and visually appealing, with a finish that matched the client’s exact vision.

Efficient Use of Materials and Space

We used a combination of carefully selected materials to make sure that both the interior and the exterior of the wardrobe were durable and suitable for the space.

  • White Chipboard for the Interior: To create a practical, cost-effective solution, we used white chipboard for the wardrobe’s interior shelving, hanging spaces, and structural elements. White chipboard is a highly durable and versatile material that is easy to maintain and clean, making it an ideal choice for the interior of a wardrobe. It also allowed the wardrobe to blend seamlessly with the light tones of the room, contributing to the airy and open feeling of the space.

  • Fibrapan Hidrofugo Moisture-Resistant MDF: To ensure the wardrobe’s long-lasting durability, especially in an attic where moisture can sometimes be a concern, we used Fibrapan Hidrofugo. This is a moisture-resistant, 3-layer MDF board that is highly durable and less prone to warping or damage from humidity. This material was used for the door surrounds and the frame of the wardrobe, ensuring the wardrobe’s structure would last for many years, even in more challenging environments like an attic.

These materials were carefully chosen not only for their functionality but also for their aesthetic qualities. The smooth surfaces of the MDF doors and surrounds added a refined touch to the wardrobe, while the white chipboard interior kept the space feeling light and spacious.

Maximizing Storage Space

Given the limited space available in the attic, we focused on making the most of every inch by including both hanging space and shelving in the wardrobe design. The hanging areas were designed to accommodate the client’s wardrobe needs, while the shelving offered a convenient place to store shoes, accessories, or folded garments.

The angled ceiling presented an opportunity to create unique shelving solutions that fit the contours of the space, offering extra storage without sacrificing style. We made sure that every corner of the wardrobe was utilized to maximize capacity, ensuring that the client could store all of their items in an organized and accessible way.

Wood Used

The materials we used in this project were chosen for their durability, moisture resistance, and aesthetic appeal. Here’s a breakdown of the woods and materials used:

  • White Chipboard for Interior: The white chipboard was used for the interior shelving, making it practical and easy to maintain while contributing to a light, clean aesthetic.
  • Fibrapan Hidrofugo Moisture-Resistant MDF for Surrounds and Door: For the exterior elements of the wardrobe, we used Fibrapan Hidrofugo, a premium moisture-resistant MDF that is durable and highly stable. This material was perfect for the angled ceiling application and was used for the wardrobe’s doors, surrounds, and frame.
  • 6mm Plywood for Custom Doors: The 6mm plywood used to create the custom doors allowed us to ensure a precise fit while maintaining durability. The use of plywood also made the doors lightweight and easy to operate, without compromising on strength.
