Requirements / The Challenge:

This particular project presented an exciting challenge: transforming an underutilized corner of a box room over the stairs in a home located in Tralee, County Kerry. The client came to us with a clear vision—to make the most of this awkward, otherwise wasted space by creating a highly functional wardrobe solution that would also be stylish and sophisticated.

The corner, positioned at an angle due to the stairs below, was difficult to work with. The room itself was small, with limited space and tricky architectural features that included sloped ceilings and an uneven floor. The client wanted to maximize every inch of this space while integrating a wardrobe that offered both hanging storage and additional shelving for accessories and shoes. The goal was to make the area feel open, yet organized, without overwhelming the room’s natural flow.

The primary challenge was ensuring that we could combine a sliding wardrobe system with open shelving that fit seamlessly into this angled space. At the same time, the client also wanted a modern aesthetic that would align with the existing decor of the home. The wardrobe had to be functional but also serve as a stylish focal point for the room. Additionally, the client requested durable materials, ensuring that the wardrobe would not only look good but would stand the test of time.

Our Solution / Project Description:

Our team at WalkInWardrobes.ie was excited to take on this project, and we worked closely with the client to ensure we met their expectations for both style and functionality. We approached the project with a keen focus on maximizing space, creating smart storage solutions, and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the room.

Innovative Space Planning & Design

To address the limited space and awkward angles, our first step was to conduct a thorough assessment of the area. The box room had a low ceiling and a slanted wall due to the stairs underneath, but these characteristics also presented us with an opportunity to design a unique wardrobe that would fit snugly into the corner. Our designers carefully mapped out every inch of the available space to ensure we utilized every possible area without making the room feel cramped or overwhelming.

The design incorporated a 2-door sliding wardrobe system, which was ideal for the narrow entry to the room. Sliding doors were an excellent solution to save space, as they eliminated the need for swing doors that could obstruct movement within the small room. The wardrobe was divided into two sections, with one side allocated for hanging storage and the other for shelving and drawers. The sliding doors were fitted with a steel frame in a sleek, modern finish, complemented by mirrored panels that not only added a touch of luxury but also reflected light, making the space feel more open.

Clever Shelving & Storage Solutions

One of the client’s key requests was for open shelving. To achieve this, we designed bespoke open shelving that ran over the angled part of the stairs. This shelving was perfect for showcasing shoes, bags, and accessories while maintaining a clean, organized look. The open shelves helped make the wardrobe feel airy and light, and they provided the client with a visually appealing way to store items that were often left on the floor or cluttering other areas of the home.

We also included drawers beneath the shelving to accommodate smaller items like scarves, hats, and jewelry, ensuring everything had a designated place. A reclining clothes lift was integrated into the wardrobe to allow the client to store heavier or less frequently worn garments with ease. This lift could be pulled down for easy access and then pushed back up to maximize the available space.

By mixing hanging sections with shelving and drawers, the design provided the flexibility the client desired. The wardrobe was tailored to store a variety of clothing items—from long coats and dresses to short-sleeve shirts and trousers—while offering space for accessories, shoes, and other essentials.

Aesthetic Design Elements

As part of the solution, we incorporated sleek metal details into the design. The doors were framed in a minimalist steel finish, which complemented the modern and industrial vibe that the client requested. The steel frame also created a striking contrast against the soft, light wood tones used throughout the interior. To further elevate the design, the mirrored panels were carefully selected to match the wardrobe’s color scheme and reflect light, making the room feel brighter and more spacious.

The color scheme was chosen to ensure the wardrobe blended seamlessly with the rest of the room and the home. The doors featured a sophisticated grey metal finish, which gave the wardrobe a contemporary feel. Inside, the light grey and white tones of the wood created a sense of balance, offering a neutral backdrop that allowed the client’s clothes and accessories to take center stage.

Wood Used

To achieve the desired look and feel, we used a combination of high-quality wood finishes that enhanced both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the wardrobe.

Light Grey and White Wood Finish

For the interior of the wardrobe, we selected a mix of light grey and white finishes that complemented the overall design of the room. The light grey wood veneer created a soft, contemporary look, while the white wood added brightness and a sense of space. The combination of these two tones created a balanced, airy atmosphere, making the small room feel larger and more open.

The light grey wood used for the shelves and drawers provided a subtle contrast to the sleek grey metal doors, creating a modern and cohesive design. The white finish was used on areas that required a brighter touch, such as the background of the open shelving and some of the drawer fronts. Together, the grey and white finishes created an inviting, neutral palette that worked well with the overall color scheme of the room.

Durable Materials for Longevity

The wood used in this project was not only aesthetically pleasing but also built to last. We sourced materials that were both durable and easy to maintain, ensuring the wardrobe would stand up to everyday use while retaining its beauty. The wood was treated with a high-quality lacquer that added a layer of protection against wear and tear, making it resistant to scratches, stains, and fading.

The shelves and drawers were designed to be sturdy and capable of holding a variety of items, from heavy coats to delicate accessories. This ensured that the client could store a wide range of clothing without worrying about overloading any part of the wardrobe.
