Requirements / The Challenge:

For this project in Rosscarbery, Co. Cork, the client required a custom sliding wardrobe solution that spanned the full length of the room. However, the design came with a unique challenge: the room featured a chimney breast located in the middle of the wall, which created an obstruction in the otherwise continuous space. This meant that the wardrobe would need to be carefully designed to fit seamlessly around this architectural feature while maximizing storage space.

The client wanted a wardrobe that offered a combination of hanging space, shelving, and drawers, making it ideal for a variety of storage needs. The goal was to design a wardrobe that provided an efficient and stylish storage solution for all of the client’s belongings while complementing the room’s existing features. The chimney breast created a difficult layout, and a typical wardrobe wouldn’t work in this space. It was crucial to find a solution that respected the architectural integrity of the room while still achieving the client’s vision of a modern, functional wardrobe that utilized the full length of the wall.

Additionally, the client wanted a clean and contemporary look that would fit with the room’s minimalist design. They requested a sliding door wardrobe that would be easy to access and maintain, with a finish that would contribute to the room’s overall aesthetics without overpowering it. The doors needed to balance both practicality and style, with a mix of materials that provided a sleek, modern finish.

Our Solution / Project Description:

At Walk In Wardrobes, we specialize in creating bespoke storage solutions tailored to the unique needs and challenges of each space. For this particular project, our team rose to the occasion, ensuring that the wardrobe would not only fit around the chimney breast but also serve as an elegant and functional addition to the room.

To address the challenge posed by the chimney breast, we designed a wardrobe that seamlessly adapted to the layout. The wardrobe was divided into three sliding doors, with each door specifically crafted to fit the space available. The design incorporated a mix of hanging spaces, drawers, shelves, and even trouser racks to ensure that every type of clothing and accessory could be neatly stored. The wardrobe was divided in a way that allowed the hanging sections to be placed around the chimney breast, with the shelving sections designed to fit around the feature without creating any awkward gaps or wasted space.

One of the most impressive aspects of this project was how we integrated the chimney breast into the wardrobe’s design. By placing shallow shelving units above and around the chimney breast, we ensured that no space was wasted. These shelves served as perfect storage for items like hats, scarves, or smaller accessories, while still allowing the wardrobe to appear seamless and cohesive. The overall design provided both accessibility and functionality, ensuring that every part of the wardrobe was easy to access despite the challenging layout.

The interior of the wardrobe was thoughtfully laid out to accommodate a variety of storage needs. For the hanging sections, we included both long hanging space for dresses, coats, and longer items, as well as shorter hanging space for shirts and jackets. The combination of drawers and shelving offered the flexibility needed for folded clothes, shoes, and accessories, while the trouser racks added an extra layer of convenience for the client.

The wardrobe doors themselves were designed to complement the modern aesthetic the client desired. We used a mix of grey metal and white glass panels to create a sleek, contemporary look that seamlessly blended with the room’s overall design. The combination of these materials provided a refined contrast between the soft, neutral tones of the glass and the industrial, clean finish of the metal. The doors were framed in our signature Evoke Silver Frame, which added an extra touch of elegance and sophistication.

The sliding doors were chosen for their practicality—since the room’s layout was tight, the sliding mechanism allowed for easy access to the wardrobe without requiring extra space for doors to swing open. This feature ensured that the wardrobe did not disrupt the flow of the room while still offering ample storage space.

This custom wardrobe design demonstrated how our team at Walk In Wardrobes is able to take even the most complex room layouts and turn them into functional, beautiful storage solutions. Despite the challenges posed by the chimney breast, the final result was a wardrobe that made the most of the available space, offered ample storage, and complemented the room’s minimalist design.

Wood Used

For this project, we carefully selected a mix of materials that would create a balanced and harmonious design. The interior of the wardrobe was crafted using white interior timber. The white finish on the timber contributed to a clean, modern aesthetic while also making the space feel larger and brighter. The light-colored interior also provided a neutral backdrop, allowing the wardrobe’s various components—such as the shelves, drawers, and hanging sections—to stand out in an organized and visually appealing way.To add depth and contrast to the overall design, the wardrobe’s timber surround was finished in Finsa Light Grey, a subtle yet sophisticated shade that blended seamlessly with the white interior. The light grey surround provided a soft, contemporary frame around the wardrobe’s sliding doors, creating a pleasing balance between the glass, metal, and wood components. This choice of finish ensured that the wardrobe did not feel too heavy or overpowering in the room, while still adding a touch of warmth and texture through the natural wood finish. The combination of white interior timber and Finsa Light Grey for the surround not only created a visually appealing design but also ensured the wardrobe would be durable and long-lasting. Both materials were selected for their superior quality, and their timeless appeal means that the wardrobe will remain stylish and functional for many years to come.
