Requirements / The Challenge:

In the picturesque town of Tralee, County Kerry, we were approached with a unique project that required us to design and create a bespoke built-in timber bed and headboard for a challenging space: an under-stair box room. The client wanted to maximize the use of this otherwise unused space, transforming it into a cozy, functional bedroom, without compromising on storage or aesthetics.

This project posed several challenges. The under-stair box room is often a tricky space to design for, given its unconventional shape, including slanted ceilings, limited floor space, and awkward corners. Our client wanted the room to feel cozy and inviting, without it becoming cramped or overcrowded. They also wanted to incorporate a multi-functional storage solution to keep the room organized and tidy.

To meet these needs, the bed and headboard design had to be carefully planned to make the most of the available space, ensuring it did not feel claustrophobic while offering significant storage options. Additionally, our client asked for shelving above the bed, which would allow for extra storage, as well as the ability to display decorative items or books. We were also tasked with integrating LED lights into the shelving, to enhance the overall ambiance of the room and highlight the storage area above the headboard.

The main requirement was to create a space that didn’t just serve as a bedroom but offered clever storage solutions that fit seamlessly with the overall design, making it both practical and visually appealing. The challenge was to balance functionality with style, ensuring the final product reflected the client’s vision while optimizing the room’s potential.

Our Solution / Project Description:

At WalkInWardrobes.ie, we specialize in designing bespoke furniture that adapts to the unique characteristics of every room. When faced with a challenging space like this under-stair box room, our goal was to maximize storage and comfort while keeping the space feeling light and airy. After consulting with our client about their vision and requirements, we set about creating a detailed plan that would transform the room into a stylish and highly functional bedroom.

Bespoke Timber Bed with Storage Underneath

The bed was the focal point of the design. To create a custom-built timber bed, we designed a structure that not only fit perfectly into the awkward space but also provided extra storage underneath. Instead of a traditional bed frame, we created a built-in design that utilized the full available floor space. Beneath the bed, we incorporated drawers for storage, offering an ideal solution for stashing bedding, clothing, and other items that would otherwise take up valuable closet space.

The drawer storage was designed to be spacious and accessible, ensuring that it was both practical and easy to use. The drawers were created with smooth runners for easy opening and closing, and the deep drawers ensured that the space under the bed was fully utilized.

Timber Headboard with Integrated Shelving and LED Lighting

Above the bed, we created a bespoke headboard that served not only as a stunning design feature but also as a functional element of the room. The headboard was constructed from Finsa Superpan Caledonian Oak, a material chosen for its rich texture and natural warmth. This timber complemented the warm, cozy feel that our client desired for the room.

The headboard itself was equipped with integrated shelving—a space-efficient design that provided the client with an area to store books, small decor items, or other bedroom essentials. The shelving extended across the width of the bed, offering ample storage without overwhelming the room. To enhance the ambiance and create a soothing atmosphere, we installed LED lights into the shelving units. The lights not only illuminated the shelves but also highlighted the natural beauty of the Caledonian Oak timber, adding a soft glow to the room.

The LED lighting also added a modern touch to the design, contributing to the cozy yet contemporary vibe that our client envisioned. The lights were carefully placed to avoid harsh glares, creating a calming environment that was perfect for winding down at night.

Optimizing Storage in a Compact Space

Given the constraints of the under-stair box room, we needed to be strategic about the storage solutions. We aimed to design a space that was functional yet visually spacious. In addition to the drawer storage under the bed, we incorporated the shelving above the headboard to keep the room organized and clutter-free. By utilizing vertical space, we ensured that the room retained its sense of openness, without feeling too cramped.

We also took into consideration the need for easy access to stored items. The drawer storage beneath the bed was designed with soft-close mechanisms for smooth and quiet operation, ensuring that the client could easily store or retrieve items without any hassle. The shelving above the bed was designed with practicality in mind, with adjustable compartments that could be customized to suit different storage needs, from books to personal items.

Wood Used

The key material for this project was Finsa Superpan Caledonian Oak, chosen for its aesthetic appeal and functionality. Finsa Superpan is a premium, high-quality engineered wood known for its strength and durability. Its textured surface adds a natural, rustic charm that worked perfectly with the client’s vision of creating a warm and cozy bedroom.

Finsa Superpan Caledonian Oak

The Caledonian Oak finish has a rich, golden tone, and its fine grain patterns give the room a warm, inviting feel. The wood's natural hues complemented the soft tones of the surrounding room décor, contributing to the overall tranquil and stylish atmosphere. It provided a beautiful contrast with the LED lighting, allowing the timber’s natural grain to stand out.

We used the Finsa Superpan Caledonian Oak for both the headboard and the shelving above the bed. The strength and durability of this material ensured that the design would last for many years, withstanding daily use while maintaining its elegance. The wood’s refined look matched perfectly with the modern, yet cozy design our client envisioned for their under-stair bedroom.
